It's actually a little frustrating to see a game with some solid ideas end up losing itself in mindless repetition
and overuse of some very neat ideas. Sadly, such is the fate of many
licensed games, and though Alice in Wonderland comes so very,
very close to being something I could recommend to old and young alike, it falls just short of anything but a rental.

The
Need for Speed series is going through quite a bit of change this year,
with the HD versions heading in the direction of Shift -- a highly
realistic, technical racer -- and the Wii and DS versions going towards
a more arcade-intense style with Nitro. For Nintendo fans, Need for
Speed has been a regular addition to the Wii library year over year,
though it comes with some ill feelings. Each version felt like a port,
with little polish to the tilt controls or any true Wii continuity to
the interface/design. It felt like a bare bones crossover title with
very little effort involved.

years of waiting for a truly standout flight game on Wii, XSEED has
really delivered with Sky Crawlers: Innocent Aces. Mixing in dozens of
different mission types within the game's 18 stages, the Project Aces
team puts a more arcade-inspired anime spin on its typical flight
engine, and the result is a truly rewarding one. There are still a few
stages that drop the ball visually, and every now and then you'll find
a line of dialogue that sounds a bit too cheesy, but the core gameplay

Sonic
and SEGA All-Stars Racing may not have a whole lot in the gameplay
department that it can call its own, but Sumo Digital took what worked
and built a SEGA-themed experience that captures what makes the
company's games so memorable. This racer is surprisingly deep and
robust, and even with its unoriginal design it's a great time no matter
which version you get.

Like
a beautiful underwater Animal Crossing, 2007's Endless Ocean was pretty
much the complete antithesis of the hectic, violent modern videogame.
Gentle, relaxing, open-ended, it was the perfect stress reliever.

There's
only so much you can do to dress up five old games, but SNK Playmore
has done a fair job in adding extras, making sure the whole package
runs well and presenting the content nicely. I'd recommend this
compilation to almost any fighting game enthusiast looking for some
nostalgia-inducing fun, but the King of Fighters games aren't for
everyone. That said, Orochi Saga felt right and I enjoyed revisiting
some classic fighters.

Snowmobile Challenge is a reasonable racing game, but it doesn't pack a
whole lot of excitement in with the disc and manual. If you're really
into snowmobile arcadey racers, you may find a fair bit to like here.
Otherwise, there are a number of other and better "extreme" racers to
choose from.

With
digital distribution on the rise, arcade compilations are starting to
get less significant because the games can be consumed individually for
a small, impulse cost. What still makes compilations important is not
just how many games can be fit on a disk, but in how these original
games are celebrated. Data East Collection has all the pieces, but it's
just thrown together so haphazardly, and ultimately there are only a
couple of games here that are really worth the time.

Steel doesn't live up to the hype. It nails everything except gameplay
control, which is absolutely and indisputably the most important
factor. It's especially unfortunate because the game's aiming
sensitivity is fine. When your screen is still, you can easily target
and pick off enemies – you'll be able to unleash head-shot after
head-shot, to be sure. The problem is that you can't turn from left to
right without dragging your screen there with the reticule, which is
ridiculous. It's either an oversight or a terrible design choice, but
either way it profoundly interrupts.

Monkey Ball: Step & Roll, like the previous Super Monkey Ball:
Banana Blitz, is a fun ball-rolling design with a nice stack of
challenges and a hit-or-miss pile of mini-games. There are some neat
inclusions like the Super Mario Galaxy-like co-op mode where other
players can shoot obstacles out of the players’ way. The added balance
board support wasn’t that much of a selling point for me – on paper it
sounds like a match made in heaven but in practice it’s just a great
big load of frustration. Skip the balance board support and you’ll have
a good time.
